The suspension, which affects both the Senate and House of Representatives, will run from Monday, July 14 through Tuesday, July 22. The announcement was made by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, following directives from the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House.
In the formal statement, lawmakers were advised to postpone scheduled engagements and ensure full participation in the state burial and national mourning activities. The National Assembly also extended its heartfelt condolences to the Buhari family, the people of Katsina State, and Nigerians at large.
They praised the late former President’s lifelong dedication to the unity, sovereignty, and development of Nigeria, describing his legacy as “etched in the annals of Nigerian history.”
Former President Buhari, who ruled Nigeria as a military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and returned democratically from 2015 to 2023, was widely regarded as a symbol of discipline, anti-corruption, and national service.
His passing has sparked national grief, with flags flying at half-mast across the country and tributes pouring in from world leaders. His burial is scheduled to take place in Daura, Katsina State, in accordance with Islamic rites.
