Quiet but Effective: Governor Dapo Abiodun’s Approach to Securing Ogun State

By Ikenne local Government Chairman:Hon Jamiu Mohammed Asimi.

In a period where many parts of Nigeria are grappling with rising insecurity, the leadership of Dapo Abiodun in Ogun State stands out not for bombastic proclamations or headlines, but for a steady, pragmatic, and multi-layered security strategy. Through a combination of community policing, modern surveillance, strategic reforms, and regional collaboration, his administration seeks to protect lives, property, and investment in Ogun, fostering stability quietly but effectively.

Strengthening Local Security Architecture

One of the cornerstones of Abiodun’s security policy has been the bolstering of Amotekun, the state-level security outfit. In 2025, he approved recruitment of an additional 1,000 Amotekun personnel, raising their strength to over 2,000, and provided essential logistics such as patrol vehicles, electric motorcycles, and communication devices to ensure better coverage across the state.

Leveraging Technology & Surveillance

The administration has also embraced technology, acquiring surveillance drones to monitor major highways and critical zones, including the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. This enables swift detection of criminal activity and response.

Community-Focused & Preventive Measures

Abiodun has emphasized community cooperation, urging residents to report suspicious activities. The government has initiated documentation and screening of non-indigenes, especially those working for multinational companies or newly settling in the state.

Regional & Institutional Collaboration

As Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum, Abiodun has championed creation of a dedicated Zonal security fund and real-time intelligence-sharing framework among southern states. He has also reiterated the call for state police, arguing that local policing improves intelligence gathering and rapid intervention.

Why Abiodun’s Approach Works
The Abiodun administration's approach is sustainable, balancing technology and community engagement, focusing on prevention over reaction, and prioritizing regional cooperation. This has created a secure environment, attracting investment and economic growth.

Challenges Ahead
However, challenges remain, including effective implementation, community participation, regional cooperation, and addressing socioeconomic issues driving insecurity.

Conclusion
Governor Dapo Abiodun’s approach to securing Ogun State is quiet, strategic, and forward-looking. By strengthening local security, embracing technology, engaging communities, and building regional cooperation, his administration demonstrates that security is about shaping environments where crime cannot take root. As Nigeria faces complex security challenges, Ogun under Abiodun serves as a blueprint for state leadership, institutional investment, and collective responsibility producing lasting peace.
