The royal appeal was contained in a press release issued and signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Chief Ayoade Solomon Olugbemiga, following a courtesy visit by the Executive Members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, led by its Chairman, Comrade Abass Adewale Akeem, on Tuesday at the Olubadan Palace, Oke Aremo, Ibadan.
Oba Ladoja admonished media practitioners to desist from fake news and destructive journalism, urging them instead to embrace developmental journalism in line with global best practices.
“Gone are the days of pull-him-down journalism. Modern journalism demands constructive and responsible information dissemination that promotes peaceful coexistence, unity, progress, and meaningful development,” the monarch declared.
The paramount ruler further offered prayers for journalists across Nigeria, asking God for their protection, blessings, and favour as they continue in the discharge of their professional duties.
Earlier in his remarks, the newly elected Chairman of the Oyo State NUJ, Comrade Abass Adewale Akeem, expressed appreciation for the warm reception accorded him and his delegation by the Olubadan of Ibadanland.
He called on other traditional rulers across Yorubaland and Nigeria to emulate the admirable virtues of Oba Ladoja, including resilience, preservation of Yoruba cultural heritage, humility, simplicity, service to God and humanity, love for peace, and commitment to both human and material development.
Comrade Akeem assured the monarch of the unflinching support of journalists in advancing the growth and development of Ibadanland and Oyo State.
According to him, the purpose of the visit was to pay homage to the first-class monarch and receive his royal blessings.
In a related development, the management of the Forest Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN), led by its Director-General, Dr. Tachana Buba; the management of The Sun Newspaper, led by the Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief, Mr. Onuoha Ukeh; and the Board of Directors of Independent Newspapers, led by Managing Director Steve Omanufeure, also paid courtesy visits to the Olubadan. They all pledged their support for the progress and unity of Ibadanland, Oyo State, and Nigeria at large.
