Ifede also told the newly inducted headteachers to get ready for rural postings, warning that the government would not accommodate those who consistently rejected postings to rural areas.
The chairman described headship as more than a promotion, saying it was a call to “responsibility, accountability and service” to children and the state.
He also warned against absenteeism, indiscipline, examination malpractice, discrimination and the misuse of public resources, urging the new school heads to lead with integrity, transparency and accountability.
“You will be entrusted with public resources and the welfare of children. This requires integrity, transparency, discipline and accountability,” he said.
The board further charged the new headteachers to focus on improving pupils’ literacy and communication skills, stressing that every learner in public primary schools must be able to write, read and communicate effectively.
The chairman said the headteachers should see themselves not only as administrators but also as instructional leaders, mentors and role models who must have a direct impact on classroom activities.
Ifede further urged the headteachers to support teachers, maintain safe and inclusive learning environments, engage parents and communities constructively, and protect the dignity and best interests of every learner.
He disclosed that, “Where learners struggle to read, strengthen their reading. Where handwriting is weak, improve it. Where teachers require support, provide it. Where resources are underutilised, deploy them effectively. Let your schools become examples of excellence, discipline, innovation and effective teaching.”
Also speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof Abayomi Arigbabu, urged the newly inducted headteachers to join forces with the state government to build a solid foundation for the educational pursuits of residents of the state.
