Army Declares Three-Day Mourning for 17 Soldiers Killed in Niger Ambush

The Nigerian Army has announced a nationwide three-day mourning period in honour of 17 soldiers killed in a brutal ambush by suspected bandits in Kwanar Dutse, Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State. The ambush occurred during a joint military operation targeting armed criminal elements in the forested region. Ten other personnel sustained injuries during the attack, which was met with fierce resistance by the soldiers before reinforcements arrived.

Army spokesperson Lt. Col. Appolonia Anele stated that all military formations have been directed to fly flags at half-mast from June 25 to June 27, 2025. She described the fallen troops as brave patriots who paid the ultimate price in defence of Nigeria’s territorial integrity. The military also extended its condolences to the bereaved families, assuring them of continued support and recognition for their loved ones' sacrifices.

The incident has reignited concerns over growing insecurity in Nigeria’s north-central region, where large numbers of bandits operate from forest hideouts. Citizens and analysts have called for enhanced military intelligence, better equipment, and strategic action to curb the rising wave of attacks on security personnel and civilians alike.
