IGP orders investigation into viral video of retired officer allegedly handed N2m benefit after 35 years of service

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has reacted to the viral video of a retired Superintendent of Police who claimed he was handed N2 million as his benefit after serving the force for 35 years.

In the video that made the rounds on social media, the officer who retired from the force on October 1, 2023, said the Nigeria Police Pension Board recently informed him that his total retirement benefits had been approved at N3 million.

According to him, the amount includes N1 million in arrears covering the period from October 2023 to date, and N2 million as his full terminal benefit. 

He vehemently rejected this and appealed to the IGP to investigate it.

Reacting to the video, the IGP in a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, directed the NPF Pensions Limited to urgently look into the claims, identify any possible lapses, and ensure appropriate actions are taken to address the issues raised.

The IGP emphasized that the welfare of both serving and retired personnel remains a top priority, noting that effective and timely pension administration is vital for maintaining morale and upholding the integrity of the institution.

While acknowledging that efforts have been ongoing to improve the pension system, Egbetokun stated that constructive feedback, such as that shared in the viral video, is essential for driving needed reforms.
