NYSC Denies Extending Service of Corps Member Who Criticised Tinubu

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has denied reports that it extended the service year of Lagos-based corps member, Rita Uguamaye, as punishment for criticising President Bola Tinubu in a viral TikTok video. The agency clarified that no such disciplinary action was taken and that extensions are only considered during the passing-out phase of service, not midway.

Uguamaye had earlier alleged that she was threatened by NYSC officials and pressured to delete the video, where she lamented harsh living conditions in Lagos and described Tinubu as a “terrible leader.” The video sparked outrage and drew attention from human rights activists, including Omoyele Sowore.

Despite viral claims from various media outlets suggesting she was penalised with a two-month extension, NYSC insists that no such directive was issued. The controversy has raised broader concerns about freedom of expression and the treatment of corps members under Nigeria's compulsory service scheme.
