Peter Obi Asks Supporters to Redirect Gifts for his 64th Birthday to Support the Poor

Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has appealed to his supporters to mark his 64th birthday by helping the less privileged instead of sending him gifts or organizing personal celebrations.

In a statement issued on Sunday, July 20, 2025, Obi said the current hardship facing many Nigerians makes it inappropriate for lavish birthday fanfare. He urged well-wishers to channel their generosity toward charitable causes such as schools, hospitals, and care homes.

Obi emphasized his long-standing stance of redirecting goodwill into tangible public good, recounting how a ₦120 million birthday gift was previously invested in building classrooms across three communities in Anambra State.

He also shared earlier experiences where stateside parties and gifts were transformed into donations of desktop computers, buses, and support for education and health sectors. According to him, such gestures reflect compassion and align with his advocacy for public service over celebration.

In his message, Obi encouraged supporters to contribute to hospitals, schools, care homes, and poverty-alleviation efforts instead of hosting events or sending personal gifts.

He shared that he spent the day quietly—praying at Rome’s Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels and the Martyrs—for the country and its leaders, imploring them to prioritize public welfare. Obi reiterated his commitment to using any personal recognition to uplift communities rather than indulge in luxury.
